Signals and Events
How Verdigris flags anomalies, and how to read specifications, notifications, and digests.
Measurements tell you what happened. Signals tell you when something is worth looking at. Signals are part of the v3 API.
The idea
A Signal is a detection rule, run automatically against your equipment's measurements. When the rule's condition is met, Verdigris records events and rolls them up into a notification you can triage.
There are three concepts:
| Concept | Plain meaning |
|---|---|
| Specification | The definition of a detection: what it looks at, how often it is evaluated, and what counts as a problem. |
| Event | A period of time (start, end, duration in minutes) when a specification's condition was met for a set of equipment. |
| Notification | The item a person works on. It groups events for one specification on one set of equipment, and tracks status, unread state and votes. |
What a specification contains
- A name and optional description, root cause analysis (
rca) and impact text. - An aggregation interval of
1m,15m, or1h. - Parameters tied to an equipment level: panel, breaker, circuit, or building.
- Equipment sets: the specific equipment it applies to.
- Criteria: one per severity level, each with its own rule. Severities are
info, warning, error, critical, andemergency. - Versioning: each change to a definition is kept as a new version, and you can read earlier versions.
Not to be confused with the Data API's Events endpoints, which return Pro Capture power-quality event records for a panel.
Which metrics can a specification use?
The site metrics catalog (/site-metrics/metrics) lists the equipment types and metrics that specifications can use. It includes electrical measurements such as power, current, voltage and harmonic distortion, with their units and compatible equipment types. Aggregation intervals are 1m, 15m and 1h.
Working with notifications
- Status is
open,in_progress, orclosed. - Each notification shows its latest severity, total days and total events affected, whether it is unread, and user votes.
- Daily digests summarize a notification per building day: highest severity, event count, and read state.
- Summary counts notifications by severity, status, and specification, so you can build a dashboard of what needs attention.
- For a specification you can read the matching events, or the computed metric values behind them, per severity.
Signals versus raw measurements
| If you want to... | Use |
|---|---|
| Chart or model consumption | Data API v4 |
| Be told when equipment behaves abnormally | Signals (v3) |
| See the detection conditions defined for your equipment | Signals specifications |
For HVAC optimizationSignals can act as a ready-made event feed (for example, "this equipment is out of its expected range") alongside your own analysis of the raw time series.
